Protecting Marbletown

Protect Marbletown is a collective of concerned residents whole live in the greater Marbletown area. We, in addition to other groups, are dedicated to returning Marbletown to its traditional concerns and protecting our special history and beautiful environment, while encouraging sensitive, sustainable, non-destructive growth for future residents.

Resident Alliance

We wish to form an alliance, to present a unified front in support of:

  • Fiscal responsibility and government transparency
  • Disciplined, coherent government planning and involvement
  • Defending natural resources

Current/Past threats that have been addressed include:

  • Town Park, Land Use
  • Controlling event spaces in a sensible manner as well as confronting other challenges.
  • Ulster County/local efforts for a Fire Training Center, burn facility on Ulster County Community College's campus.

Our group seeks to support local residents and farmers who favor maintaining our zoning rules and the adhering to our well-conceived Town Plan, which was adopted in 2005 - and has served us well since.  Until this past year, we felt our town reflected our values and goals, with respect for the past, and our agricultural and historic character.  We have been given a rare gift in our very beautiful, serene, and until now, conservation-minded place to live and work. We have now found ourselves in a position of having to combat partisan politics which can ruin our town.

Acting Now

The immediate time pressure relates to the proposed land development and construction of a second Town Park.

We do not feel that this community needs or wants a second Town Park. Improving the existing Town Park at Tongore Road reflects a more responsible, sustainable solution for current residents.

  • There is no coherent rationale behind the deforestation of proposed Cottekill lands
  • There are ways to better utilize existing Town lands, resources: 9 ballfields within town, along with 1 underused facility already on Campus
  • No lands are adjoining the SUNY site; only private family properties and farmlands adjoin the parcel
  • The County's own determination, elimination of the proposed site (2017 proposed FTC site) given  "significant development challenges - high water table and federal designated wetlands."
